Smart Solutions for Smart Grids

This a project linking the networks of NTDC (National Transmission & Power Dispatch Company) and KESC, main companies in the electric energy sector acting in generation, transmission and distribution of energy to the main cities of Pakistan. Both companies are linked to WAPDA (Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority) in charge of surveying, planning and execution of water and energy utility systems in Pakistan. This project has transformers by SIEMENS Brazil equipped with Treetech Intelligent Electronic Sensors (IEDs).

The equipment was assembled in the city of Karachi, capital of the Sindh province, the largest, most important and heavily populated in Pakistan, with approximately 15 million inhabitants. Located on the coast of the Sea of Araby, site of the region’s most important port.

Due to its economic importance, both companies are investing in the region and already have several projects under study for expansion of the electricity system. In this project, the company KESC received two 600 MVA banks, which will part of the city of Karachi’s and neighboring region’s energy mains.

Use of Intelligent Electronic Sensors for on-line monitoring purposes was not common in these companies, but similar to what has been happening in other parts of the world, energy utility services are looking to modernize their systems with a view to achieving gains in reliability in their services.

Each transformer is equipped with TM1 and TM2 Temperature Monitors for monitoring of oil and winding temperature. Banks are linked in parallel using the Parallelism System based on SPS Parallelism Supervisors. For remote access to temperature readings, IT Temperature Indicators were used in the command room.

Siemens Brazil was able to count on support from Treetech in different stages of the project, such as training and follow up of inspectors who comes to Brazil and visited the Siemens plant in Jundiaí and the Treetech head office in Atibaia, both cities in the interior of the state of São Paulo.

In Pakistan, Treetech started contact with a local venture for Pakistani clients to receive commercial and technical support with agility in that country.

In a visit to Pakistan between 08 and 18 April 2006, Eng. Rafael Fehlberg, Treetech technician for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, was in Karachi to hold training events for NTDC’s operational technicians, and for commissioning of Treetech equipment.

Engineers from Siemens Pakistan responsible for commissioning the Substation also received training. The training events allowed equipment functionality to be checked as well as the ease in operating the systems.

Sensors (IEDs) installed in each transformer and in control room:

  • TM1 Temperature Monitor (oil and winding temperatures).
  • TM2 Temperature Monitor (temperatures of two additional windings).
  • TI Temperature Indicator (remote reading of transformer temperature).
  • SPS Synchronous Parallelism Supervisor (transformer parallelism system).

Services:

  • Technical Follow Up during the work of the Pakistan Inspectors from KESC in Brazil;
  • Training of Inspectors in Brazil;
  • Commissioning of Temperature Monitoring Systems and Parallelism System in Karachi;
